Event Information

Welcome to Seattle and to the Known World Dance Symposium! Please take some time to go over the following information and review the schedule and sessions.

Attending sessions

KWDS attendees can go to any session they want, without signing up for specific sessions in advance. The one exception is the “Il Canario” class on Saturday afternoon. For that session, you must stop by the registration desk to sign up; there is limited space.

Historical costume (garb)

For events in the Meany Hall dance studios, including the Thursday night opening dance practice, historical costume is welcome but not required. This is for the convenience of travelers, and to welcome participation from the UW dance program.

Activities in Mary Gates Hall Commons require historical costume. This includes the Friday and Saturday evening dances.

Special rules for Meany Hall dance studios

Food and drink are not permitted in the dance studios. Water bottles are permitted in the studios.

Street shoes are not permitted in the dance studios. You may use dance shoes, or dance in stocking or bare feet.

Please protect the studio floors from objects that may cause damage. For example, if an instrument bears weight on a small point, provide a firm layer between it and the floor.

Please refrain from wearing suntan lotion, sunscreen, body oil, excessive moisturizing lotion, or any other greasy or slick lotions. These can cause the floor in the studio to be slippery. If you must use lotions, please wear ankle-length pants and shirts with sleeves to eliminate the exposure of oils to the dance floor.

Day use lockers are available in the hallway outside the studios. Bring a lock to secure any items you wish to store during classes. The site reports that theft has been a problem.

Food

If you are staying in McMahon Hall on campus, your box lunches will be available at the registration desk at the beginning of the scheduled lunch break each day.

The main option for food on campus is the cafeteria at McMahon Hall (open for lunch and dinner during the scheduled meal breaks); see the campus map inside the back cover for its location. The food court at the Student Union Building (HUB) just east of Mary Gates Hall will be open for Friday lunch. There are many eateries along University Way (“the Ave”) one block east of campus. Check at the registration desk for recommendations. University Village, a shopping center with a wide range of restaurants, is a short drive away at the northeast corner of the campus map.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited everywhere on campus, except for specific outdoor areas. The nearest area to Meany Hall is area 19, at the west wall near the pedestrian overpass. The nearest area to Mary Gates is area 16, the rock garden south of Gerberding Hall. The nearest area to McMahon is area 8, on the walkway south of the Art building.

Contacting event staff

If you have questions or need assistance, come to the registration desk. The desk will be in Mary Gates Hall Commons when activities are happening there (Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and evening); the rest of the time, it will be outside the dance studios in Meany Hall.
